What Makes Showing Up At Function First For A Workout Unique

 

Greetings all from sunny San Diego!

So as I mentioned in my last post my exciting new part-time gig as part of the X-Factor Team at Function First – leading Small Group Classes. There are a few reasons why attending classes here or benefiting from 1:1 training is unique and quite beneficial. There are many options at Function First. In this post I will just highlight two of the reasons why training here is different.

But first – the studio/gym itself!

The Core-Tex

Anthony Carey is not only the CEO and owner of Function First, nestled in Mission Hills in San Diego. He is also the inventor of the Core-Tex. Now looking at it especially in a picture it may just look like a balancing tool. However it is much much more than that.

The Core-Tex is a reactive training device that combines dynamic strength, cardiovascular endurance, razor sharp reaction, flexibility and balance…

Reactive training, what is that?  To explain if you are doing pushups on it – it is a pushup like non other. The reason is that while you are pushing down the Core-Tex reacts to your pushing and has 360 degrees of movement. Thus your stabilization muscles are called into action so you are using more than lowering & push muscles. Split-leg aka Bulgarian Squats really are one upped on this puppy either with the front foot on the ground or even more when the front foot on the Core-Tex. Think about doing a front plank or doing a side plank and turning that planted forearm when coiling and un-coiling.

This tool has been utilized by some professional sports teams and notable fitness gurus have jumped into line to recognize its value.

ViPR

Now this is something else I have never worked with before until I walked into Function First. This is a great thing to incorporate into workouts to move with a weight. It is much more than just moving with a dumbell etc. This is because of its shape and easy to hold handles you can do many moves that shift./swing/pickup/etc the ViPR away from the body thus making it good to strengthen that core and other parts of the body. The heaviest one we use is 20 Kilograms… but believe me there are so many exercises you can do with this that is quite a challenge.

The possibilities are endless of what simple and complex movements and flows ( & ways of grasping the ViPR too!) you can do with these with ranging weights.
