Embrace Your Potential

Instead of a usual blog post I do, some encouraging words to you, the active ager in bullet points. I will keep it short this time. The times we live in right now can be overwhelming and with facilities closed or open in restricted ways.  You may have to be more creative than before about the ways you exercise, but it is still important to find ways to move to maintain or improve your quality of life. Read on! 🙂

  • It is NEVER too late to practice better movement.
  • You either have to practice better movement on your own, seek out someone that is looking for someone like you to help, or some kind of combination of the two.
  • You may have to be patient with yourself.
  • You will have to make some sort of financial investment to maintain or improve your quality of life.
  • You have to be patient with the process.
  • You will need to be a bit uncomfortable to improve the way you move. If what you are doing is easy, that lack of challenge will not help you move towards your goals. If there is a fear of getting hurt, then the next bullet is for you.
  • You may need to invest in a fitness professional. You may find one that is not working for you for whatever reason. Don’t let that stop you. Interview another, don’t let them just interview you. Find a good fit. You are trusting them with your body.
  • Understand that better movement is only one (albeit an important one!) aspect of health. What you are putting into your body is your fuel that your body runs on. Don’t listen to celebrities or your friends on what to do. Find a qualified professional that can help give you advice about nutrition and your body and health history.
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others. This is your journey. Accept where you are now and what you have done to bring yourself to this point in time (the positives and negatives). If you are getting back on the exercise train pat yourself on the back for taking that step.
  • Stop saying, “I used to be able to…” and instead say, “I still can,” OR, “I will try…”
  • You may have to ignore friends and family that think you are “too old” to do a form of exercise that you enjoy and are seeing healthy results from.
  • Ignore whatever society says that you “should” be doing. i.e. Whatever type of strength training you should or should not be doing.
  • Reconnecting with your body and becoming more aware of (and comfortable with) how you are moving in space can be equally important to other benefits of moving better in life.
  • If you live in an area where there are not as many resources or gyms, you may have to be more proactive and vigilant to get help. Especially in the time we live in right now, there are more online resources and virtual classes.
  • You may have to break some bad habits and adopt good ones. It takes time. It is not 30 days or less quick fix.
  • You may just start enjoying being able to do what you want to do when you want to do it when you are moving better in life… 🙂
  • You need to be consistent about moving in ways to improve your quality of life. But the ways you move can differ.
  • Take to heart that motion is lotion. Move it or lose it is a bit extreme, but the more you move now, the more you can continue to move that way the next day or even move better in time.

Don’t stop, keep on going! 🙂
